| The eleven Summary MSA's are simply very large MSA's that the Census Bureau has divided into Metropolitan Divisions (referred to as "MD"s). Each MD is of a size and has characteristics that warrant treatment as if it were a stand alone MSA and is represented on the map by an orange outline encompassing the blue MD areas. Each "Summary MSA" is the "sum" of its constituent MD's, and may be retrieved from the MSA search by list page or by clicking on the appropriate Summary MSA which follow. It is interesting to note than several standard MSA's are actually larger than some of the "Summary MSA"s - e.g., Houston and Atlanta. |
